How do I earn my Private Pilot certificate?

You’ll train with an instructor who teaches you how to safely fly an airplane step by step. You’ll learn how to take off, land, and handle the airplane in different situations, plus how to plan trips and understand basic weather and rules. After you’ve practiced enough, you’ll fly by yourself for the first time, take a written test, and then finish with a final flight and oral exam with an FAA examiner to earn your license.

The Private Pilot Journey

After your discovery flight, your training shifts from “trying it out” to building real pilot skills. You’ll work with your instructor through a series of milestones that develop your confidence in the airplane, your knowledge on the ground, and your ability to make safe decisions. Below is what the typical path looks like as you progress toward your Private Pilot Certificate.

1. On-Boarding

To begin training with the school you'll meet with an instructor who'll get to know you. You'll get introduced to our systems and upload required documents.

2. Begin Training

Your first few flights will get you comfortable in the airplane and begin introducing you to some of the basic maneuvers you'll perform on your exam and get the feel for flying.

3. FAA Medical & Student Certificate

Soon after you start training you'll work with your instructor who'll help you find an Aviation Medical Examiner and secure your student pilot certificate.

4. Continue Training

As you continue your training you'll prep for your solo flight. In this you'll learn to maneuver airspace, control the airplane in different phases of flight and master the controls. This is a major stage of training that will lead to your success as a pilot.

5. Solo-flight

A time-honored tradition and rite of passage in aviation. You'll conduct your first solo flight and join the lineage of aviators who get their shirt tails cut away!

6. Written Exam

During this time you'll have both learned to fly the plane but also wealth of knowledge on the ground. You'll then take the written pilot exam at a local testing center and pass with a 70% or greater.

7. Cross-Country Flying

As you near the end of your training you'll conduct a number of required flights with and without your flight instructor leaving the comfort of your home airport and travel to some awesome destinations!

8. Checkride Prep/Exam

And we near the end at last! After hours of studying and training you'll work to prepare for your exam with a Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE)
